Adaptive Reuse in Shenzhen

15 Mar

Adaptive reuse of old or unused buildings don’t usually happen in Shenzhen because the land value is skyrocketing. The economic return is way much higher to erase what’s there and then build a tower. Interestingly, at the Overseas Chinese Town, many old factories were converted to art galleries, fashion warehouse, eateries, and coffee shops. The conversion was tastefully done and most buildings got a facelift. However, to get a taste of the “art” here is not something a local can afford every day, just a cup of cappuccino would cost you $50 RMB or $8 US and dont’t expect a refill. Here in Asia, adaptive reuse projects only happen for the upper-middle class.
